Pam Bates was hit with the most devastating news of her life on July 31, 2015. Her husband of 34 years was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. He had three months to live.
Pam had been with Carl since high school. They had raised two beautiful children who blessed them with 3 grandchildren at the time, now 7. This was the last thing anyone had expected. It was harvest season and Carl was a farmer. They were not only wading through grief, but dealing with practical issues like who is going to harvest the crops?
On September 25, 40+ farmers came together with 10 combines along with tractors and wagons and harvested all of his crops in 10 hours. It was an immense act of compassion, and caught the attention of media outlets around the world.
Carl’s story became a viral sensation, but more importantly it gave them space to focus on the last few months of his life.
After Carl’s passing, Pam felt a calling to share his story. The whole story of this everyday farmer that spent his life serving those around him, and how that community stepped up to serve him in his darkest days. Pam wanted to tell his story as accurately and respectfully as possible, so she enlisted the help of a woman who had been by her side through this entire journey. Her twin sister, Paula Patty.
